18:00 Birth of Britain with Tony Robinson
Hidden Volcanos
Documentary The Time Team presenter steps into territory we'd normally expect Professor Iain Stewart to be striding over: a geological history of our islands, with added layman's enthusiasm. In this first episode, Robinson is touring Britain to learn about the many volcanos that ripped through the land masses of what would become the British Isles 450 million years ago, up to those of 60 million years ago, when Britain finally separated itself from the North American continent. Travelling from Edinburgh to Skye via Snowdonia, it's a fascinating story, with lots of footage of oozing lava, and incidental, "Ooh, I never knew that" facts to squirrel away for future pub quizzes: James Hutton, the father of geology, did most of his key work while exploring Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh; and the Romans, apart from being nifty engineers, took advantage of a handy cliff of fossilised sheet lava to build Hadrian's Wall. Radio Times reviewer - Gill Crawford
