11:15 Mogambo
Film In 1932, Clark Gable made a film for MGM called Red Dust, a story of lust set in the jungles of south-east Asia featuring Gable as a rubber planter choosing between temptress Jean Harlow and demure Mary Astor. This remake from director John Ford is relocated to Africa with Gable again, but this time as the safari leader who divides his time between stranded showgirl Ava Gardner and anthropologist's wife Grace Kelly. The steaminess of the original is gone, but this is still an enjoyable Technicolor adventure romp fit for the postwar Eisenhower era of healthy living, with a supporting cast of monkeys, lions, elephants and rhinos. Freddie Young shot the African exteriors, Robert Surtees did the interiors in Hollywood.

22:00

22:00 Southland
U-Boat
Drama The stentorian, unnecessary voiceover announces: "Sooner or later every police officer will learn you can't save everyone." Who is this bloke? Southland doesn't need him. It can manage perfectly well without these bite-sized homilies. Because it's a good, solid police series that's turning into a real grower. The characters are engaging and, though the stories tend towards the predictable (there's one this week whose ending you'll see coming from about 15 miles away), it all works. Tonight, we accompany rookie Ben Sherman on his first solo duties in a squad car while wiser, older partner John Cooper gives the hopeless Chickie Brown a few ad hoc lessons in proper police work. Little Ben has an eventful shift, fuming at a dad who deliberately humiliates his son by making him mow the lawn in women's underwear and helping to track down a missing nine-year-old Korean girl. But it's his fateful meeting with a woman who claims her ex-boyfriend is stalking her that proves the most memorable. Radio Times reviewer - Alison Graham
