A Good Man in Africa
Film Barely playing above the level of a second-rate Carry On movie, this tale of consular shenanigans in a small African republic is a sad misfire from Bruce Beresford, the director of Driving Miss Daisy. William Boyd's screenplay of his own wickedly funny novel has casanova diplomat Colin Friels blackmailed into "persuading" doctor Sean Connery to support president-elect Lou Gossett Jr's building project. In a film that's ponderous and completely devoid of humour, with supremely bizarre casting all down the line, good man Connery is the only saving grace, with Beresford mistakenly thinking that the crass, stereotypical shambles of a script passes for satire and insight.
