Return to Never Land
Film Disney's recycling of JM Barrie's main themes from their classic animated feature Peter Pan is surprisingly effective here, although the animation is occasionally a little flat and the snatches of new songs are rather unnecessary. Now married with two children of her own, Peter Pan's one-time playmate Wendy Darling has never stopped believing in "The Boy Who Would Never Grow Up" and has regaled her offspring with his exploits. Her daughter Jane has no time for such piffle, what with the realities of the Second World War on their doorstep, but on the eve of her evacuation, she's kidnapped by Captain Hook (who thinks she's Wendy) and taken to Never Land to be used as bait in the capture of his nimble nemesis. Cleverly set during the Blitz - to highlight the need for escapism when real life is full of horror - this is a heartfelt paean to childhood innocence and the power of imagination.

George of the Jungle 2
Film The vine-swinging hero (Christopher Showerman, replacing original star Brendan Fraser) returns with wife Ursula (Julie Benz) and son George Jr (Angus T Jones) in tow in this cheeky, colourful sequel. The plot sees George facing the loss of both family and home when Ursula's mother brings former fiancé Lyle to steal her back and bulldoze Ape Mountain. It's a breezy enough sequel, and well-paced, and as such, could pass the time well enough, but only if you're addicted to elephant dung jokes and are happy to put up with Showerman's reasonable impersonation of Fraser's goofy charm.

Camp Nowhere
Film Every conceivable stereotype of American teenagehood is on display in this woefully unfunny slice of wish fulfilment, as a bunch of spoilt nerds set up their own summer camp with unemployed drama teacher Christopher Lloyd in nominal charge. There are one or two laughs when the suspicious parents show up for an open day, but the whole production has a "dashed-off" air to it. The children are both bratty and anaemic, and the film would benefit from a good deal less of them and more of reliable old hands M Emmet Walsh and Burgess Meredith.

Toy Story
Film Though this magnificent film will go down in history as the first completely computer-generated animation feature, it is much more than just a technical tour de force. Making full use of a superb, Oscar-nominated screenplay and an accomplished voice cast led by Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, director John Lasseter has delivered a great adventure story that will not only entertain children but can also be enjoyed as a jokey parable by adults. In a suburban bedroom, Woody (Hanks), an old-fashioned pullstring cowboy, lords it benevolently over Mr Potato Head (Don Rickles), Bo-Peep (Annie Potts) and Rex the Dinosaur (Wallace Shawn) and remains his owner's favourite toy until the arrival of birthday present Buzz Lightyear (Allen), a hi-tech space-ranger. Apart from the brilliant characterisations of Hanks, Allen and the rest of the cast, mention should also be made of Randy Newman's masterly score, which was Oscar nominated along with his song You've Got a Friend and provides a perfect complement to the action.

Lilo & Stitch
Film This warm and wonderful animated fantasy sees Disney continue to move with the times. An innovative and quirky mix of comedy, family drama and fast-paced action, it's as lush and lovely as its Hawaiian setting. Accompanied by a foot-tapping Elvis Presley soundtrack, the film pushes a message of multicultural equality and tolerance so all-encompassing that it even embraces extraterrestrials. In the process, it turns lonely youngster Lilo's friendship with cute but naughty alien fugitive Stitch into a candy-coloured morality tale. The importance of "Ohana" (family) and the unconditional love and loyalty that accompany it are hammered home continually. Yet, whether it's Lilo's older sister fighting to keep her sibling out of care, or badly behaved Stitch learning the values of a tidy bedroom, the life lessons are sweet and easy to swallow. The only weak points are the thankfully short intergalactic sequences, in which the austere surroundings and creatures appear lifeless in comparison to the vivid characters and gentle watercolour backgrounds of planet Earth.

Rocketeer
Film Director Joe Johnston (Honey, I Shrunk the Kids) clearly had fun making this very entertaining swashbuckler that will jet-propel you back to your most cherished childhood fantasies. Based on a cult graphic novel that blends Second World War adventure and superhero thrills, this brilliant ode to those corny 1930s movie serials has an added Art Deco sheen that enhances the sophisticated nostalgia. It also benefits from Timothy Dalton's hissably slimy Nazi agent, masquerading as a devil-may-care, Errol Flynn-inspired matinée idol.
