Prayers for Bobby
Film A dowdy-looking Sigourney Weaver brings class to this tragic true-story drama, playing a 1970s suburban mother who's struggling to reconcile her young son's homosexuality with her devout religious beliefs. But while she and troubled screen offspring Ryan Kelley (Mean Creek) both give strong performances, they're continually undermined by director Russell Mulcahy's irritating visual style. Incorporating a mess of unnecessary camera techniques and odd angles more suited to his music video past, Mulcahy foolishly detracts from the tale's emotional core, which dilutes its impact in the process. With heavy-handed symbolism adding further clutter, it's not until the heart-rending final act and Weaver's impassioned pleas that the film's events really hit home in the way they deserve.

Live UEFA Europa League Football
SC Braga v Dynamo Kiev
Sport SC Braga v Dynamo Kiev (Kick-off 8.05pm). All the action from the quarter-final second-leg contest at the Estadio Municipal de Braga, as the teams contest a place in the last four. The tie is delicately poised after the 1-1 draw in the first leg in Ukraine, although the Portuguese outfit may feel they hold a slight advantage after scoring an away goal. Kiev will also have to do without the services of their talismanic forward Andriy Shevchenko, who was sent off in the 61st minute after committing two bookable offences, despite only coming on as a substitute at half-time. Andriy Yarmolenko had given the Ukrainian champions the lead in just the sixth minute, when his header finished off a fine run and cross from Oleh Gusev. Their advantage was short lived though, as Hugo Viana's corner produced a scramble for the ball that ultimately led to Gusev turning from hero to villain as the ball deflected off him into his own net to level proceedings. Subsequent programmes subject to change.

Striking Distance
Film The river police are not usually known for their on-screen heroics, but this ripsnorting Bruce Willis vehicle certainly puts them on the map. Willis plays his usual hard-nosed loner, who here finds himself relegated to the unfashionable water cops (and partnered with Sarah Jessica Parker) when he breaks ranks and testifies against a fellow officer. However, a serial killer with an unhealthy interest in Willis's life offers the chance of redemption. The aptly named Rowdy Herrington ensures the action roars along, and the set pieces are suitably big and brash, while the exemplary supporting cast - John Mahoney, Dennis Farina, Tom Sizemore and Robert Pastorelli - can't be faulted.
