Hangman's Knot
Film This tense western drama set at the end of the American Civil War was the sole directing credit for Roy Huggins, the creator of such television series as The Fugitive and Maverick, and it deserves reappraisal. Randolph Scott heads a memorable cast, playing the commanding officer of a group of Confederate soldiers who are unaware that the war has been over for a month when they steal a Union gold shipment. Regarded as common criminals, they take refuge in a stagecoach station, where the claustrophobic action erupts.

The Cowboys
Film John Wayne hires a group of schoolboys to help him on a cattle drive in this morose, awkwardly paced and overlong would-be epic western. In truth, this rite-of-passage saga just doesn't work, owing to a cumbersome structure and a rather nauseating pro-violence, revenge-is-good message. On the plus side, Bruce Dern and Slim Pickens are good to watch, and Roscoe Lee Browne and Colleen Dewhurst add thespian dignity. But the movie isn't worthy of Wayne, and is indicative of his lack of luck finding strong material following his Oscar for True Grit .

Jumanji
Film It was dismissed by many critics as a noisy, scary and utterly worthless excuse for some ingenious computer effects, but as empty experiences go this fantasy adventure is absolutely exhilarating. Toddlers, as well as pre-teens, will be spellbound by the marauding wildlife that is unleashed when Kirsten Dunst and Bradley Pierce rescue Robin Williams from the sinister board game in which he's been trapped for 26 years. Any film where the action is determined by a roll of the dice is bound to be episodic, but this hardly detracts from the enjoyment as one spectacular set piece follows another. The result is wonderful, escapist family entertainment.

Joe Kidd
Film The spaghetti western meets its classic American origins, but Clint Eastwood's potent "Man with No Name" persona is in conflict with John Sturges's anonymous direction in this misfiring range-war saga. Eastwood's gunman is up against greedy businessman Robert Duvall, who's dispossessing Mexican-Americans of their land, but there's little to get excited about in this indifferent effort scripted by Elmore Leonard. The one fun highlight is when Eastwood drives a train through a saloon to mow down the villains.

Revolver
Film Writer/director Guy Ritchie (with a little help from Luc Besson) has strayed from his accessible Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels to concoct an eye-catching if intellectually overblown game of criminal cat and mouse. A bearded Jason Statham stars as Jake Green, a gangster who vows vengeance after a prison stint covering for his weirdly monikered boss Dorothy Macha - enthusiastically overplayed by Ray Liotta. But Green ends up in the hands of two vicious loan sharks (Vincent Pastore from The Sopranos and rapper Andr? Benjamin from Outkast) who may or may not have their own agenda. Quoting from Machiavelli and using the rules of chess as a metaphor for surviving in the world of crime probably sounded good on paper. But what unfolds here is a pretentious and repetitive substitute for a coherent plot as Green's identity - and the storyline as a whole - slides into a lukewarm intellectual smorgasbord.
