Sex and Lies in Sin City
Film Conjecture abounds in this patchy TV dramatisation of the controversy surrounding the 1998 death of drug-addicted Las Vegas casino owner Ted Binion. After an apparent overdose becomes a murder investigation, Binion's ex-stripper girlfriend (Mena Suvari) is among the prime suspects. In a flashback-heavy narrative, Matthew Modine creates an emotionally complex Binion, alternating between jovial loudmouth and hard-living brute, as director Peter Medak tries to put together the pieces that led to the alleged homicide. But the frequent moving backwards and forwards in time merely makes an already underdeveloped script feel even less cohesive. Despite all the sex and scandal involved, events lack bite and it's only the solid performances that keep the film afloat.

The Shepherd
Film Any film that stars Jean-Claude Van Damme busting heads while his pet rabbit watches can't be all bad. It's just a shame that the bunny vanishes after the opening diner brawl. Released just before JCVD reworked Van Damme's on-screen persona with a postmodern wink, this strictly conventional action thriller takes the star to the US/Mexican boundary where he joins the Border Patrol and tracks down drug-trafficking bad guys. The certifiably silly plot featuring illegal immigrants strapped with suicide bomb vests detracts from the real meat of the movie, the well-choreographed fight sequences and shoot-outs. A stint in a Mexican jail sees Van Damme proving that he's still a hard target, director Isaac Florentine framing the action with an eye for his star's acrobatic ability. British actor Scott Adkins provides solid support as Van Damme's chief adversary, his martial arts prowess something of a surprise for anyone who remembers him from Holby City.
