While the women's seeds struggled at this stage last year, there were few such problems for the men, with only David Ferrer and Viktor Troicki, ranked 18 and 30 respectively, being eliminated. Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andy Roddick and eventual champion Juan Martin del Potro all progressed with straight-sets victories.
